Medication Administration in School

New York State Education Law prohibits school personnel from administering medication to students in school without proper documentation from your students primary care physician. Please contact the School Nurse for the proper forms to be filled out by the prescribing physician.

Please DO NOT send any medication to school with your child, this includes prescription and over the counter. This includes topical creams/ointments, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, cough drops, eye drops, or any other medication. If it is necessary for your child to receive prescribed or over the counter medications, please ask your doctor to arrange to have your child's medication scheduled for outside of school hours. All medications must be dispensed through the health office.

When circumstances make it necessary for your child to take medication during school hours, the School Nurse will cooperate with you and the family physician. Please provide the school health office with a written request. The request must be accompanied by a written prescription by the family physician which is to include the frequency, time, dosage, name of medication and why it needs to be administered during school hours rather than at home. School personnel will administer the required medication during school hours in accordance with the written instructions.

Medication will only be dispensed under the conditions described above. When medication is required, parent/guardian should bring the doctor's statement to the School Nurse with a supply of the medication in the original container from the pharmacy which filled the prescription. This medication will be kept in the Health Office. These written requests must be renewed each school year.
