Board Candidate Bios/Statements

Dear Maryvale Community,

Here are statements from our two candidates for the Board of Education.  Voters will choose one (1) candidate for a five-year term.


Craig Meyers

My name is Craig Meyers. It has been my honor and privilege to serve on the Maryvale Board of Education in various capacities for the last six (6) years.  I am currently the BOE Vice President.
 I can tell you I have lived in Cheektowaga my whole life and received a bachelor's in Engineering from RIT.
Despite heavy cuts in funding from Albany we have been able to accomplish the following:
  • Secure $2.7M in funding from 2017-2020
  • Refinance 2008 Bonds saving the District $800K over a seven (7) year period
  • Renovate the Maryvale Planetarium with digital equipment and programming
  • Establish Community Partnerships with:
Big Brothers/Big Sisters
YMCA Summer Camp and HS Leadership
WNY United
DUCA Community Mentoring
  • Helped restore: 
     18 teaching positions
     Fully fund athletics
    Returned High School Intramurals

I do not take sole credit for any of this, I was lucky enough to work with board members and administrators that share a "Student First" agenda that is now our culture.

I am running for Maryvale School Board because:

Our school system today is not the same school system of 10 years ago. The conversations in education are different. I will bring fresh eyes, new energy and proven leadership to the School Board.

We need someone on the School Board who can build teams, find common ground among various interests and get the best results. I am that someone. As a human service provider and past teacher my professional background has led me to work effectively and collaboratively with people from all walks of life. I have experience in cutting already slim budgets, as well as making the strategic decisions about where to increase budgets. Through my more than 10 years as an elementary educator my lens is always what's best for our children today, in order for them to succeed tomorrow.

As a parent, I know what I expect from my child’s education. As important as it is to focus on preparing graduates for higher education, it’s just as crucial that we prepare them to be responsible and employable members of society by balancing college prep with aptitude testing and career and vocational studies. I want to ensure that all of our children are prepared for life after school.

There is much work to be done, and if I am elected, I will focus on the following priorities:

1. I will help the board to address, and to close, the academic achievement gap using my experience in the education system and with innovative community-based partnerships.

2. I will continue to advocate for the financial resources from the County, State Legislature and Federal representatives to maintain, and to improve, our school district.

My strong background in education and my current background in the Non-Profit world serving a Community Based Organization makes me a strong candidate to serve on the Maryvale School Board.
