Regents Exams, Course/Class Credit and Graduation

Dear Maryvale Community,

Yesterday, the NYS Board of Regents announced that they were cancelling Regents exams this year.

Today, they issued guidance to Districts that addressed awarding Regents Exam credit, Course/Class credit, and Graduation.  I want to take this opportunity to let you know how Maryvale is proceeding.

The guidance contemplates many different scenarios and situations- so it will be impossible to accurately communicate how we will proceed with each and every student via this message, but here is how we are setting up the flow of communication in order to get this information to parents and students:

  1. Administrators are meeting and reviewing the guidance.
  2. The Building Principals will then meet with their Teacher Coordinators and Counseling staff to make sure everyone is on the same page so that the same consistent message is shared with families and students.
  3. Teacher Coordinators will meet with their content/grade levels to discuss how students will attain course/class credit based on this guidance.
  4. Teachers will communicate that information to students and families in their classes.

Here is what I can tell you now:

  • Every MHS Senior will be contacted personally by their Counselor to review with them what they will need to do to graduate.  Counselors will only begin to do this after everyone is on the same page in understanding this guidance.
  • Students who were to take a Regents exam this June will be exempted from passing that exam in order to earn a diploma:
    • if they are enrolled in a course that ends in a Regents exam and they earn credit in that course by the end of the 19-20 school year.
    • if they fail to earn course credit by the end of this year, they will need to make up course credit during summer instruction.
    • if they previously passed a course but needed to take the exam in June to attain credit- as long as they intended to take the Regents exam this June.
  • Students will earn course/class credit in all courses/classes/grade levels as long as the student has met the standards assessed in the provided coursework- that is, the grades earned in the first marking periods/trimesters plus the coursework provided and graded during this closure.

A few things to close:

  • Please know that we are actively working through this guidance, but we want to be sure that we are doing the right things for our kids and also that we communicate accurately to you- so please allow us some time to work through our plan in the coming few weeks.
  • Also, please understand that this is the guidance as it stands today.  Future guidance from NYS may or may not supersede this- but be assured that we will communicate with you any changes to this message.

I apologize for this long message, but I wanted to be transparent with you about how we are proceeding with this important topic during this unprecedented time.

Thank you and please stay safe and well.
