Welcome to English 10
After successfully completing your Freshman year, you've learned the rules, rituals, and routines of Maryvale High School. This year, your knowledge and experience will be challenged, as you will be expected to be role-models for this year's 9th graders. In addition, more will be expected of you with respect to your academic performance. You will be expected to remain focused, work hard, ask questions, and get the most out of your time in English 10.
Our study this year will focus on four skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking for information, literary expression, critical analysis, and social interaction. These skills are reflected in the task that constitutes the core of the Common Core English Regents Exam. According to the New York State Education Department, you must pass this examination in order to graduate from high school. Along with traditional, district approved short stories, plays, poetry, and novels, we will incorporate study of informational texts as approved by the New York State Education Department that are aligned with the current Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) and College/Career Readiness initiatives.
All assignments (both minor responses and major assessments) will allow you to practice skills that are necessary to master in order to be successful on the CC Regents Exam. The assignments you will be required to complete this school year are designed to mirror the tasks you will be faced with when you take the CC Regents exam next year in English 11.
Please see the attached Course Syllabus document for supplies needed for class.
